ISSUES

Education

Chair: Andrew Tonachel

Staff:
Education Coordinator – Astrid Suarez
Boone Community School Resource Coordinator – Honorio Morales
Grow Your Own Parent Teacher Coordinator –Hina Mahmood

Vision:
To improve the quality of education in local schools by fostering successful partnerships between parents, principals, teachers, and community organizations.  We believe that through developing parent leaders we create the foundation for the academic success of the school as well as  strengthen connections to community and families.

Immigrant Rights

Chair: Abel Nunez, Centro Romero

Staff: Ismael Romero

Vision:
To ensure that inalienable rights inherent to human dignity are secured for immigrants within our community and to make strong connections within and between the diverse communities of the north lakefront of Chicago.  A just and equitable society requires that all have the right to work, education, health and housing. We address issues on the local and state level that impact the human rights and dignity of immigrants in our community.   Also, though the New American’s Initiative program we aim to help legal permanent residents start their naturalization process and engage them in civic life to improve opportunities for all in our communities.

Jobs

Co-Chairs:
Johnny King, Cornerstone Community Outreach
Aaron Eckhardt, REST

Staff: Cory Muldoon

Vision:
To build power and understanding around the values of dignified work and racial justice.  Specifically, we work to reform the barriers created by criminal justice system to individuals returning to our communities from incarceration.  We know that we cannot have a healthy community without employment opportunities for all members of the community.  To this end we seek to unite the diverse experiences of ONE members in efforts to create employment opportunity, reform the criminal justice system and strengthen relationships between race and ethnicity.

Youth

Chair: Luci Salinas

Staff: Teresa Neumann

Vision:
To cultivate the leadership capacity of high school youth to be active civic participants and agents of social change in their schools and communities.   We believe that it is imperative to engage youth on the root causes of issues leading to the dropout rate as well as youth incarceration rates in Chicago.  Our community is healthier and stronger when youth are actively engaged and perceived as leaders and the community supports their success.

Land Use and Housing

Chair: Rian Wanstreet

Staff: Sandi Gutstein

Vision:
To protect and improve affordable housing on the Northeast side of Chicago by building strong coalitions between tenant organizations, faith institutions, affordable housing providers and community members. Through strong leadership and solidarity, we work to build a healthy, vibrant, multi-ethnic and mixed income community with that has a powerful voice in developing and preserving housing for all members of our community.

Homelessness

Chair: Randall Doubet-King

Staff: Cory Muldoon

Vision:
To use the collective power of the Organization of the North East to protect the right of all individuals to remain housed in our community; assure a continuum of services for people who are without housing or are marginally housed; to work with service providers in their search for resources; and to stand with them when they are under attack.
